Think About It Before You Buy Your Next Mattress

A mattress is something you sleep on every single night.

It affects your comfort, your recovery, your energy, your posture, your back, your mood, and ultimately your overall quality of life.

Yet many people shop for a mattress based on one thing alone, ‘price’.

But before you buy your next mattress, stop and ask yourself an important question:

What is actually inside that mattress?

If a Queen Size mattress is being sold in Bermuda for $500, $600, $700, $800, or even $900, what is realistically left inside that mattress after all the costs are factored in?

Think about everything involved before it even reaches the showroom floor:

  • Manufacturing costs
  • Packaging
  • Overseas shipping
  • Freight charges
  • Import duties
  • Wharfage and customs fees
  • Documentation charges
  • Warehousing and storage
  • Delivery logistics
  • Advertising
  • Retail overhead
  • Staff wages
  • Profit margins for both manufacturer and retailer

After all of that… what remains for actual quality materials, support systems, cooling technologies, craftsmanship, and long-term durability?

In many cases, corners have to be cut somewhere.

And if that raises concerns, imagine the compromises that may exist in mattresses sold online for only a few hundred dollars.

The Truth About Cheap Mattresses

Many lower-priced mattresses use lower-density foams and lower-quality support systems that may initially feel comfortable in a showroom but can begin breaking down far sooner than consumers expect.

This can lead to:

  • Sagging
  • Body impressions
  • Loss of support
  • Heat retention
  • Reduced comfort
  • Poor spinal alignment
  • Shortened mattress lifespan

A mattress may feel soft and comfortable for five minutes in a store. The real test is how it performs after hundreds, or thousands, of nights of actual sleep.

Foam Quality Matters More Than Most People Realize

Not all foam is created equal.

Whether a mattress contains:

  • Polyurethane Foam
  • Memory Foam
  • Gel-Infused Memory Foam
  • Copper-Infused Memory Foam
  • Natural Latex
  • Organic Latex

…the quality of those materials makes an enormous difference in comfort retention, durability, health standards, and longevity.

That’s why certifications matter.

Reputable mattress manufacturers often use independently certified materials such as:

  • CertiPUR-US®
  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100
  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard)
  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
  • GREENGUARD Gold®
  • eco-INSTITUT®

These certifications help verify that foams and textiles meet standards for emissions, chemical safety, material integrity, and environmental responsibility.

If a mattress does not carry recognized certifications, consumers should ask questions about what materials are actually being used.

The Hidden Concern: Off-Gassing and Low-Regulation Manufacturing

Another important consideration is where the foams and materials were manufactured.

Some extremely low-cost mattresses are produced in regions where regulatory oversight and manufacturing standards may not be as stringent as those found in North America or Europe.

In some cases, uncertified imported foams,  particularly very low-cost synthetic foams,  may be more prone to stronger chemical odors and off-gassing.

Off-gassing refers to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and chemical odors that can occur when certain foams and adhesives are new.

While many mattresses have a temporary “new mattress smell,” higher-quality certified foams are typically manufactured under stricter emission and safety standards designed to reduce excessive VOC emissions and improve indoor air quality.

Cheaper uncertified foams may:

  • Produce stronger chemical odors
  • Have inconsistent foam density and durability
  • Break down more quickly
  • Use lower-quality chemical formulations
  • Lack independent emissions testing and certification

This is why certifications such as CertiPUR-US®, OEKO-TEX®, GREENGUARD Gold®, and eco-INSTITUT® are important indicators consumers should look for when evaluating mattress quality and safety.

What About the Springs?

If the mattress is a traditional spring mattress or a hybrid combining springs and foam, another very important question is:

Where were the springs made?

Most consumers never ask this, but they should.

The quality of the steel, the manufacturing process, and the carbon content within the spring wire all affect how long the mattress maintains its support and “memory action.”

Many inexpensive mattresses use imported spring systems manufactured with lower-grade steel and lower carbon content.

What does that mean?

The springs may lose their resilience much sooner, resulting in:

  • Reduced support
  • Premature sagging
  • Poor recovery
  • Faster breakdown of comfort and structure

Once a spring system loses its memory action, the mattress can no longer properly support the body the way it was originally intended.

Higher-quality North American-made spring systems generally use better steel, tighter quality control, and more durable engineering designed to maintain support and comfort over a much longer period of time.
